During Kyobe Foundation’s visit to the home of dreams orphanage headed by Wanume Lasuli, menstrual health wasn’t given utmost importance to ensure the well-being and dignity of the girls residing there. Providing menstrual kits meant that the girls would forego food due to limited financial resources. Our team led by our team leader Nakiyaga Miriam offered comprehensive menstrual support to cater to the menstrual needs of the girls at the home of dreams orphanage and ensured that all girls have access to high-quality menstrual products. By providing these necessary resources, we helped the orphanage eliminate any barriers that were hindering the girls' participation in daily activities, including education and social interactions. In addition to providing menstrual products, we encouraged the orphanage staff to prioritize education and awareness about menstrual hygiene management. This educational approach not only promotes their physical well-being but also nurtures a positive attitude towards menstruation, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.
Furthermore, the orphanage implements comprehensive systems for waste management and sanitation to ensure a clean and hygienic environment during menstruation. Adequate facilities such as private and comfortable toilets with clean water from a borehole provided by Scott Cook and Melissa Kellog ensure that appropriate disposal options are made available to the girls. These measures not only contributed to better menstrual hygiene practices but also helped create a culture of respect, privacy, and dignity around menstruation. We helped the orphanage recognize the emotional and psychological aspects associated with menstruation. Creating a safe space where girls can openly express their concerns and seek support contributes to their overall mental well-being and fosters a sense of belonging within the orphanage community.
Ultimately, Kyobe Foundation’s commitment to menstrual health goes beyond providing basic necessities. It strives to empower the girls by addressing their unique needs and challenges related to menstruation. By promoting proper menstrual hygiene management, education, and emotional support, Kyobe Foundation ensures that menstrual health becomes an integrated part of the girls' overall well-being, enabling them to lead healthy, confident, and fulfilling lives.
